The logic of science is beautiful, although science itself can also be vague and elusive. We are trying our best to delineate the scientific world with nicely designed experiments and quantitative methods. New technologies make dramatic changes in how we understand cells, organisms, and nature. I want to learn how to think about and solve scientific questions systematically, and doing a PhD is the best way to gain this kind of training. In my first research experience, I worked on the mechanisms of T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia brain infiltration. We had a mouse model that recapitulated clinical cases. I was trying to characterize the mouse model and look for the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. It was the first time that I realized how my research could influence the clinic. At Gerstner Sloan Kettering, the program similarly brings our research close to the clinic. To unwind, I like walking around the city after work. It’s very relaxing.
