Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is the first academic research institution worldwide to join a major global initiative focused on revolutionizing clinical trial administration.
The i-HD eSource Scale Up Task Force, led by the European Institute for Innovation through Health Data (i-HD), includes invitation-only members from leading industry and healthcare organizations. The Task Force aims to drive and scale the implementation of large-scale electronic patient data transfer between electronic health records (EHRs) and clinical trial databases.
Why does this matter? Presently, up to 70% of clinical trial data is duplicated between research databases and EHRs. EHR to electronic data capture (EDC) technology integrates data into an EDC system or a sponsor’s study database without duplication or replacing site staff, minimizing site burden, speeding study timelines, improving data integrity, enhancing patient safety, and reducing costs.
“If innovations such as eSource, or EHR to EDC, were fully implemented, they could also enable research that might otherwise not happen, paving the way for the development of medicines that otherwise would never reach patients,” said Mats Sundgren, PhD, MSc, Senior Industry Scientific Director at iHD.
The Task Force will provide impartial recommendations and shared experiences to vendors, pharmaceutical companies, and healthcare organizations on best practices for implementing large-scale electronic patient data transfer. The Task Force also will engage additional stakeholders, including other hospitals, leading EHR to EDC vendors, and EHR vendors.
“At Memorial Sloan Kettering, we’re not just leaders in patient care; we’re pioneers in adopting transformative technologies that reshape the clinical research landscape. Our participation in the i-HD eSource Scale Up Task Force underscores our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in clinical research,” said Joseph Lengfellner, Senior Director of Clinical Research Informatics & Technology at MSK.
MSK is committed to improving the way that clinical research happens worldwide. “By working with i-HD and embracing EHR to EDC technology at scale here at MSK,” Mr. Lengfellner adds, “we’re not only enhancing our own clinical trials but also blazing a trail for other institutions to follow. We believe that by demonstrating the potential of this approach, we can help speed innovation across the industry, ultimately accelerating the pace of medical discoveries and improving patient outcomes worldwide.”
