Joseph Hai Oved, MD, MA
Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist & Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist
My Role at MSKWe post reviews for MSK healthcare providers who have at least 30 patient experience surveys completed. If you do not see reviews for a provider, it may be because they do not yet have enough survey responses, or the provider may not be part of the group of healthcare providers included in the survey.
Only outpatient providers are included in the survey. Healthcare providers who only work in the hospital or in urgent care are not included in the survey. Pathologists or researchers who do not provide direct care to patients do not have reviews.

About Me
- Assistant Attending Pediatrician
I am a pediatric hematologic oncologist on the MSK Kids team who specializes in the use of stem cell/bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapies to cure noncancerous diseases. I focus on transplantation to cure patients with hard-to-treat immune dysfunctions or inherited immune deficiencies, as well as those with bone marrow failure syndromes.
Treatment with bone marrow transplantation, cellular therapies, and gene therapy can be overwhelming for young patients and their family members. My goal is to normalize this experience as much as I can. I take the time to learn about my patients and their families and form deep bonds with each of them. Embarking on the transplant process is a partnership between our team and each family, and we strive to take a collaborative approach to their treatment.

In addition to caring for patients, I conduct research to help advance my field. My research focuses on new ways to personalize transplantation to achieve a precise cure with minimal side effects. We do this by studying the effects of the different techniques we use to manipulate the donated stem cells, taking out or adding specific cells of interest. We also study how exposure to different conditioning agents (chemotherapies or other medications used to prepare the body for a transplant) affect outcomes. Similarly, these studies help us understand how the immune system rebuilds itself after transplantation. We are also working on identifying biomarkers to more accurately predict transplant outcomes.
I am a member of several national and international groups in bone marrow transplantation, hematology, and immunology. I participate on committees for many of these organizations, where we discuss the potential of future therapies, clinical trials, and efforts to further improve the field of pediatric transplantation and cellular therapies.
I always knew that I loved working with children and that I wanted to be a physician. That said, I did not always know which specialty I would choose. One day, I got a phone call telling me that I was a match for an 11-year-old girl who needed a stem cell transplant. The experience of being a donor for this young patient whom I have never met was transformative. Every year on the day that I donated, I wait eagerly by my phone for an update on how she is doing. That experience taught me how amazing the field of pediatric transplant can be, and it was an easy choice for me after that!
