Get to Know Me

I am a medical oncologist and translational researcher, specializing in colorectal cancer and other gastrointestinal cancers. I care for patients in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of specialists including surgeons and radiation oncologists.

My care philosophy is patient-centered, utilizing the latest evidence-based best practices and tailoring them to meet the unique values and needs of each patient. I enjoy a strong rapport with my patients through open communication throughout their treatment journey.

The limitations of existing treatments drive my passion to develop more effective and more tolerable therapies. My research is focused on colorectal cancers, particularly those with a mutation in PIK3CA gene. I conduct patient-oriented biomedical research using patient-derived tumor samples and mouse models. I have been investigating the impact of drugs that block PI3K signaling, a key pathway in cancer growth, on other cancer promoting signals within the cell, and on cancer fighting immune cells. The ultimate goal of my research is to translate scientific knowledge into new clinical trials. In addition, I have a keen interest in making clinical trials more accessible to patients at MSK’s regional centers.

Outside of work, I enjoy quality time with friends exploring new places and new cuisines.

What I Do at MSK

A gastrointestinal (GAS-troh-in-TES-tih-nul) medical oncologist is a cancer doctor who specializes in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. This includes anal, colorectal, esophageal, gastric (stomach), liver, and pancreatic cancers, as well as GI stromal tumors and neuroendocrine tumors.

Let me preface my comments by saying that my care from Dr. Nusrat and her team has been stellar. That being said, her team is sometimes slow to respond to messages or follow-ups. They are much better if queries are made on line than via phone. Last, I wish Dr. Nusrat was more positive in her approach and shred more information as contrasted with just responding to questions that I pose. There is a personal touch missing that is crucial for most cancer patients, regardless of our condition and journey. She is great technically but somewhat lacking in addressing the emotional component - and toll - that cancer causes.
