Get to Know Me

I am a board-certified medical oncologist who specializes in caring for people with gastrointestinal cancers. These include esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, hepatobiliary cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

I see patients at MSK Bergen. I feel privileged to provide state-of-the-art care to our patients close to home in Northern New Jersey.

As a member of MSK’s Gastrointestinal Oncology Service, I am part of a team of experts from different areas. My colleagues include medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, psychiatrists, oncology nurses, social workers, and dieticians. Together, we provide our patients comprehensive, high-quality care. We also offer access to many cancer clinical trials at MSK Bergen and help patients enroll in studies based at MSK in Manhattan.

My research has focused on developing new therapies for gastrointestinal cancers. These include targeted chemotherapy for cholangiocarcinoma and immunotherapy for hepatocarcinoma. I am also interested in using personalized medicine, such as molecular profiling, to develop treatment strategies that are best suited to attack an individual’s cancer.

After I meet with patients, it’s my goal that they leave my office with a sense of trust. I want them to know that they are in good hands and our entire team of experts will support them throughout their experience at MSK.

When I’m not working, I enjoy photography, sports, and music.

A gastrointestinal (GAS-troh-in-TES-tih-nul) medical oncologist is a cancer doctor who specializes in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. This includes anal, colorectal, esophageal, gastric (stomach), liver, and pancreatic cancers, as well as GI stromal tumors and neuroendocrine tumors.

The MSK team is always professional, competent, efficient and friendly. Dr. Ping Gu and his team are a world class group. Since Feb 2022, they have provided me with excellent care and have saved my life. I cannot thank them enough.

Your check in procedures are chaotic. I used to check in once and the staff kept track of the various appointments. Yesterday I waited over an hour after my CT scan for an appointment only to find out that Dr Gu was now on the 2nd floor and has a separate check in. How was I supposed to know this? If patients need to fend for themselves, then provide patient access to the schedule portal. Alternatively, the staff should look at the schedule after completion of each activity and guide the patients to the next location. Yesterday was the most frustrating, time consuming and least productive visit in my 3 year association with MSK. There are several other details from this series of appointments that contributed to my poor experience on this day. Call me for details if you care.
