Head & Neck Cancer Screenings in Harlem

All are welcome to get screened for head and neck cancer at this free community screening event. During the screening, a specialist will look for signs of head and neck cancer. You can also access resources, or meet with a specialist about quitting tobacco, nutrition, and vaccination against HPV.

 

What is head and neck cancer?

This type of cancer can occur in the nasal passages, mouth, throat, or voice box. Thousands of people are newly diagnosed with head and neck cancer each year. Many of them can be cured. The best chance for a cure is when the cancer is found early.

What are the warning signs?
  • a lump in the neck lasting more than two weeks
  • a persistent sore or growth in the mouth or throat
  • a lasting change in the voice
  • frequent nose bleeds
  • ongoing nasal congestion
  • constant earaches
  • bloody phlegm lasting several days
  • problems swallowing
What does a screening involve?

• In the exam, a specialist will look for signs of head and neck cancer.

• Resources will also be provided on quitting tobacco, nutrition, and vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV).

Who should be screened?

Adults who have noticed any of the warning signs of head and neck cancer, and/or who have a history of:

  • smoking
  • drinking alcohol
  • chewing tobacco
  • exposure to humanpapillomavirus (HPV)
  • excessive exposure to the sun (sunburns)
  • radiation to the head and neck area
