Elective Course Description
Students will join members of the Breast Medicine Division of Solid Tumor Oncology and follow adult patients with breast cancer. Students will attend three weeks of outpatient solid tumor clinics where they will be expected to assist in new patient and follow-up evaluations, followed by one week of Inpatient Breast Medicine experience. Attendance at Medical Grand Rounds, Division of Solid Tumor Oncology Conferences, the Core Course in Adult Oncology and the Combined Oncology Service Conferences is expected. Third-year student prerequisite(s): Medicine Clerkship and dedicated interest in Internal Medicine.
Learning Objectives
- Students will participate in pretreatment evaluation, learn about solid tumor inpatient and outpatient emergencies, paraneoplastic manifestations, and gain familiarity with indications and toxicity of a variety of biologic, endocrine and chemotherapeutic agents.
- They will be exposed to the principles of clinical trials and various therapeutic protocols and post therapy evaluation procedures.
- Students will gain a strong command of current approaches to Breast Cancer management which will provide a broad base for much of solid tumor oncology.
