Miguel-Angel Perales, MD, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), has been named President of The American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT) for 2023-2024. Dr. Perales was formally sworn in during the 2023 Tandem Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Meetings of ASTCT and the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) on February 18.
“It is an honor to be named President of the ASTCT,” says Dr. Perales. “I have dedicated my career to improving the application and success of blood and marrow transplantation and related cellular therapies and, like my peers and colleagues across this organization, I strive every day to advance the research and clinical practice of this field. I look forward to leading the ASTCT in the upcoming year.”
Dr. Perales is the Chief of the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Service (BMT) at MSK and a board-certified medical oncologist with expertise in donor-derived hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy. In his clinic, Dr. Perales treats patients with a variety of hematologic malignancies who are in need of an allogeneic transplant or cellular therapy, including patients with acute myelogenous leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Hodgkin lymphoma.
Along with his MSK colleagues, Dr. Perales participates in a number of studies designed to improve outcomes in patients undergoing stem cell transplantation, including finding ways to lower the risk of complications, relapse, and graft-versus-host disease. He also conducts translational clinical research investigating new ways to enhance the recovery of the immune system after a transplant and ways to help the immune system fight hematologic malignancies.
Dr. Perales is the Chair of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology Transplantation and Cell Based Therapies Committee and previously served as Vice-Chair and member of the Board of Directors of Be The Match. He has held leadership positions and has been extensively involved in activities of the CIBMTR and Blood and Marrow Transplantation Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN).
