Valerie Rusch Receives the 2022 Adi F. Gazdar International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer Merit Award

Valerie Rusch, MD, FACS, Vice Chair for Clinical Research, Department of Surgery, was awarded the 2022 Adi F. Gazdar International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) Merit Award. Dr. Rusch’s career has been devoted to thoracic surgical oncology, to clinical and translational research, and she has been PI for multiple NCI-sponsored Cooperative Group clinical trials.  IASLC is a global organization dedicated to the study of lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. This award recognizes and honors Dr. Adi F. Gazdar’s lifelong dedication to lung cancer research through his pioneering work in molecular pathology.

Esther Babady Named President of the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology

Esther Babady, PhD, D (ABMM), FIDSA, Chief of the Clinical Microbiology Service, was named President of the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology (PASCV). PASCV fosters the scientific development and medical practice of viral diagnostic testing and endeavors to increase understanding of all aspects of human viral diseases, including human viral biology, disease manifestations, pathogenesis, immunity, epidemiology, treatment, and prevention. Its membership is open to laboratory directors, practicing physicians, research virologists, postdoctoral fellows, laboratory technologists, and technicians throughout the world.

Ifeh Akano and Ahmed Mahmoud Awarded the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Gilliam Fellowship

Ifeh Akano and Ahmed Mahmoud, graduate students of the Weill Cornell Pharmacology Program, were awarded the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Gilliam Fellowship. This program provides awards to pairs of dissertation advisers and their graduate students based on what HHMI values and considers essential components of the environment, particularly the institution and adviser’s commitment to creating a healthy academic ecosystem and the student’s potential for scientific leadership.
