Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) announces the following awards and appointments:

Ya-Ting Wang and Inaki Etxberria
Ya-Ting “Emma” Wang and Inaki Etxberria Receive Prestigious Early Career Researcher Awards

Ya-Ting “Emma” Wang, postdoctoral fellow, was named the 2022 Parker Senior Fellow at the Parker Institute for Cancer (PICI). PICI is helping to forge a future without cancer, by investing in today’s top talent to train and empower the research leaders of tomorrow. This award is given to researchers who recently have earned their MD or PhD and are ready to ready to establish a laboratory or independent program in cancer immunotherapy.

Inaki Etxberria, research fellow, was named a Parker Scholar at the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy. This award is given to graduate students and researchers who are entering their first postdoctoral appointments and are focused on ambitious, high-impact projects.


MSK Named One of the 2022 Best Companies for Multicultural Women by Seramount—part of EAB.

MSK was named among the 2022 Best Companies for Multicultural Women by Seramount —part of EAB. This honor recognizes companies that create and use best practices in hiring, retaining, and promoting multicultural women in the U.S. Since 2003, Seramount’s Best Companies for Multicultural Women has tracked corporations’ progress in creating cultures that encourage multicultural women to join and rise through the ranks. James Mechalakos, PhD
James Mechalakos Elected Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine

James Mechalakos, PhD, was elected as a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). The AAPM category of Fellow honors members who have made a significant contribution in research, education, or leadership in the medical physics community.


Daniel Fernando Zegarra Ruiz
Daniel Fernando Zegarra Ruiz Awarded the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center 2022 Eddie Méndez Award

Daniel Fernando Zegarra Ruiz, postdoctoral associate, was awarded the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center 2022 Eddie Méndez Award. The award is named after a former physician-scientist from Fred Hutch who focused on supporting early-career scientists underrepresented in science. The 2022 recipients are postdoctoral researchers from across the U.S. with research expertise in cancer, infectious disease, and basic sciences.


MSK’s Sustainability Program Awarded the 2022 Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award

MSK received the 2022 Top Environmental Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to driving sustainability in health care. MSK received a record 10 individual Circle of Excellence awards for outstanding performance in the areas of Leadership, Waste, Chemicals, Greening the Operating Room (OR), Food, Sustainable Procurement, Energy, Water, Climate, and Green Building.


Mijin Kim
Mijin Kim Named on MIT Technology Review Innovator 35 Under 35 List in Biotechnology

Mijin Kim, postdoctoral research associate at Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI), was named on the MIT Technology Review Innovator 35 Under 35 List in Biotechnology. Innovators in biotech are breaking new ground via machine learning, gene therapy, and CRISPR. Dr. Kim combined machine learning with special senor to detect a blood-based “fingerprint” of ovarian cancer.


Katherine Knorr,
Katherine Knorr Received the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation 2022 Physician Scientist Fellowship

Katherine Knorr, fellow in The Omar Abdel-Wahab Lab, received the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation 2022 Physician Scientist Fellowship. The Physician Scientist Fellowship funds the research of clinical investigators at the subspecialty training stage of their careers. Fellows are selected based on their projects that address significant research questions in areas ranging from oncology to hematological diseases and health outcomes.

Neeta Pandit-Taskar Awarded 2022 Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Fellowship

Neeta Pandit- Taskar, MD, nuclear medicine physician, has been selected into the 2022 Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Fellowship (SNMMI). The SNMMI Fellowship is among one of the most prestigious formal recognitions available to long-time SNMMI members and recognizes distinguished service to the society as well as exceptional achievement in the field of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging.

Jorge S. Reis-Filho and Sohrab Shah Named Susan G. Komen Scholars

Jorge S. Reis-Filho, MD, PhD, FRCPath, Chief of the Experimental Pathology Service, and Sohrab Shah, PhD, Chief of the Computational Oncology, were named Susan G. Komen Scholars. The Komen Scholars are experts in laboratory research, clinical practice, public health, and patient advocacy. They contribute to Komen’s programs by leading Komen’s scientific peer review process, and act as Komen ambassadors in communities around the U.S. and the world.

Piro Lito Received the American Society for Clinical Investigationv 2022 Donald Seldin~Holly Smith Award for Pioneering Research

Piro Lito, MD, PhD, medical oncologist, received The American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) 2022 Donald Seldin~Holly Smith Award for Pioneering Research. The award honors an early-career physician-scientist who has demonstrated exceptional creativity and accomplishments in biomedical research.
