Andrew Kung, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at MSK, presents pediatric leukemia researcher Melvyn Greaves with the annual Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Prize at the 2018 GSK commencement.
At this year’s Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSK) commencement, world-renowned childhood leukemia expert Melvyn Greaves was awarded The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Prize. Established in 2016, The Society Prize honors a preeminent researcher or clinician in the field of pediatric oncology.
Andrew Kung, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at MSK, called Dr. Greaves a “true luminary” during his introductory remarks.
“This is a prize to honor a pioneer and visionary in pediatric oncology research,” Dr. Kung said.
Dr. Greaves has been a professor at the Institute of Cancer Research in London since 1984. His many discoveries about the drivers of pediatric leukemia and the factors that distinguish its subtypes have played a pivotal role in understanding the disease and in developing new treatments.
Among his many honors are the Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research Prize from Cancer Research UK, as well as the Royal Society’s Royal Medal.
Previous honorees of The Society Prize are Richard J. O’Reilly, former Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at MSK, and James Downing, President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
