Peter Scardino (Emeritus)

Peter T. Scardino, MD, FACS, is an Emeritus Member of the Urology Service, Department of Surgery, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). In his nearly 25 years of leadership and service at MSK, Dr. Scardino significantly expanded the institution’s basic and clinical prostate cancer research portfolio. Within a year of joining MSK in 1998 as professor and Chair of the Department of Urology, he secured a Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant in prostate cancer, as well as MSK’s inaugural T32 grant to train urologic surgeon-scientists. During his time at MSK, Dr. Scardino guided urology into the era of minimally invasive surgery and recruited key leaders in bladder cancer, kidney cancer, male sexual health, and voiding function to the institution. MSK’s Urology Service continues to be recognized as a leading program in the field of urology by U.S. News & World Report, thanks to the strong foundation created under Dr. Scardino’s leadership.

In 2006, Dr. Scardino was appointed Chair of the Department of Surgery. During his 11 years of service as Chair, he led the department through an unprecedented era of expansion while playing a critical role in the implementation of MSK’s regional strategy and the design and opening of the Josie Robertson Surgery Center. These elements are lasting tributes to Dr. Scardino’s visionary leadership at MSK, which helped to establish MSK as a preeminent center of surgical excellence.
