Cryo-EM helps researchers visualize biological machines in action. Here, a team led by structural biologist Richard Hite used the technology to help explain how certain channels regulate calcium signals in cells — a process important for the regulation of cell division and differentiation, cell metabolism, and cell death. Dysregulation of these channels, known as IP3Rs, is associated with diseases including cancer.
