Treating cancer is not just about treating a disease, but you're treating a person as a whole. The goal of an oncologist is to really walk alongside a patient for their entire journey.
My name is Michael Hwang and I specialize in treating head and neck cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering. That involves a variety of cancers, including saliva gland cancer, thyroid cancer, and cancers that arise from the head and neck region.
My dad was diagnosed with head and neck cancer when I was 13 years old. Seeing his oncologist treating him with patience and understanding compassion, that's when I knew I wanted to be an oncologist.
I'm proud to offer the standard of care treatment for our patients. The treatments I specialize in are chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and molecularly targeted therapies.
Some of the top concerns that patients have when they come to see me are usually centered around understanding their diagnosis. Understanding the treatment plan. One of the hardest things about cancer is all the uncertainty surrounding it. My job is to help reassure patients that they have a whole team behind them who can spend time to treat and answer all of their questions so that they feel reassured.
Patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering have access to a large variety in breadth of clinical trials. We are matching each patient to a very specific option or treatment that really might help them in the long run.
I treat patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Commack and Memorial Sloan Kettering Nassau. What makes these regional locations unique is that we are able to bring world class care to patients on Long Island.
One of the special things about working at Memorial Sloan Kettering is the incredible teamwork that we have. Everyone I've worked with is genuinely dedicated and cares for each patient. It's not just a job. We really are here to take care of people.
