Get To Know Me

I am a hematologist-oncologist and physician-scientist who specializes in treating people with blood cancers and blood disorders. This includes different types of leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).

I am also the head of the Division of Hematologic Malignancies within the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. As leader of this Division, my goal is to be an ally and supporter to all faculty members. I see my role as a matchmaker who identifies new partnerships and collaborations that can help maximize everyone’s potential so we can work together to deliver the best care for patients.

I grew up in Switzerland and my early education was focused on music, literature, and the humanities. I was also interested in science, and I was motivated to become a physician because of the intersection between the human and scientific components of medicine. As a PhD student, I became passionate about scientific investigations to understand the role of the immune system in disease. As a resident, I had the privilege to care for people diagnosed with cancer, and I knew that this is something I wanted to pursue as a life-long career.

My training in medicine and the humanities helps me better identify the needs of each patient and come up with a plan for how to best meet these needs. Trying to find the most appropriate or innovative treatment is just one aspect of it. I also work to understand each person’s values and needs beyond their cancer diagnosis. No two patients are the same, even if they have the exact same diagnosis. I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to take care of the person, not just the disease.

As a physician, my goal is to always offer the most advanced and latest treatment options to patients. I aim to be approachable and explain the diagnosis and treatment plan in a clear, understandable way. I also enjoy teaching. A part of my job involves training residents and fellows about the different aspects of clinical management and the scientific aspects of the diseases that we are treating.

My research has involved studying how blood cells are formed and how this process can go wrong in diseases such as cancer. I also examine bone marrow transplants and how the immune system reacts to them. A big part of my research has involved understanding how a specific signaling pathway, called Notch, affects the development and function of T cells, a type of immune cell. This research helps understand graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a complication that can occur after a bone marrow or stem cell transplant in which donor immune cells identify the host’s tissue as foreign and attack it.

When I am not working, I love to travel and discover new countries and cultures with my wife, who is also a physician, and two daughters. We are a multicultural and multilingual family who speaks English, French, and Portuguese. As a musician, I am very interested in the arts and enjoy theater. We also love nature and enjoy hiking and being outdoors.
