James Robert Janopaul-Naylor, MD
Radiation Oncologist
My Role at MSKWe post reviews for MSK healthcare providers who have at least 30 patient experience surveys completed. If you do not see reviews for a provider, it may be because they do not yet have enough survey responses, or the provider may not be part of the group of healthcare providers included in the survey.
Only outpatient providers are included in the survey. Healthcare providers who only work in the hospital or in urgent care are not included in the survey. Pathologists or researchers who do not provide direct care to patients do not have reviews.

About Me
- Assistant Attending Physician
I am a radiation oncologist specializing in the treatment of prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and brain cancers. After considering a PhD in theoretical math, I pivoted to medical school when I realized how much I love working with and helping people. Radiation oncology was a natural fit, as I use state-of-the-art technology to deliver treatments to cure cancer with millimeter precision while limiting side effects as much as possible.
Cancer care is an evolving team sport. At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, we have an exceptional team of doctors, as well as nurses, therapists, and other providers who help our patients throughout their cancer journeys.

Many times, patients need surgery or anti-cancer drugs, like immunotherapy or chemotherapy, in addition to radiation therapy (RT). Regrettably, cancer treatments can cause side effects. Fortunately, RT has improved; it is now less toxic and can be delivered in fewer total treatments. Instead of needing up to nine weeks of daily RT, some patients can be safely treated in just one week. Occasionally, a single treatment is enough.
Being diagnosed with cancer is scary. Patients and their loved ones not only face an uncertain future, but also the jargon and acronyms of modern medicine. My goal is to get each patient all the information they need in a way that is clear and easy to understand. I take the time to educate my patients on the treatment options available to them and support them in deciding which best matches their needs and goals. Whatever they ultimately choose is the right choice.
I love working with patients, but I am also grateful for the opportunity to teach and pursue research. Through this work, I hope to improve outcomes and reduce treatment burden for people with cancers of the brain or pelvis. I have written and worked on multiple clinical trials, served on national committees, and published dozens of peer-reviewed articles.
When I am not working, I look forward to spending time with my family, exploring new museums, cooking, listening to audiobooks, playing ultimate frisbee, and traveling.
A radiation oncologist is a cancer doctor with special training in using radiation therapy (RT) to treat cancer with radiation.
