My goal as an oncologist is to bring hope to patients with lung cancer. My practice is informed by the latest advances in medical science, including:

  • Immunotherapies (a type of treatment that uses a person’s own immune system to kill cancer cells)
  • Personalized targeted therapies (a type of treatment that targets the genetic mutations in a tumor)
  • Clinical trials
  • Collaboration with our world-class radiation oncologists and surgeons

For patients admitted to the hospital, I work with a team of nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, specialists, and the patient’s own oncologist to ensure that my patients are well cared for at an especially vulnerable point in their life.

As a physician-scientist, I research the best means by which science can improve human lives. I led an international study showing that liquid biopsies, which match patients to targeted therapies with a blood draw rather than a tumor biopsy, can extend the lives of people with aggressive non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs). I also led one of the first studies on the relative safety of chemotherapy in patients with cancer and COVID-19.

I currently lead the Clinical Data Mining Team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). This is a group of engineers, data scientists, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows within MSK’s Computational Oncology Service and Cancer Data Science Initiative. We study novel biomarkers and integrated machine learning techniques to better reduce side effects and improve length and quality of life for our patients.

A thoracic medical oncologist is a cancer doctor who specializes in thoracic (thor-A-sik) cancers. These are cancers that have to do with the chest, including lung, tracheal (windpipe), and thymic (thymus) cancers.
