I am a gastroenterologist, internist, and nutritionist with a particular interest in cancer prevention.

I joined Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 1981 and am Director of Clinical Nutrition. I am also a professor at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Being a gastroenterologist at MSK allows me to develop close relationships with my patients and deliver hands-on care, while also engaging in research and keeping up-to-date with the latest innovations and findings. I’m motivated by challenging diagnoses and helping people get back to their health and well-being.

We have made great strides in preventing cancer and detecting it early; this has saved lives and reduced suffering. I aim to use all the tools and knowledge available to us to help people prevent cancer, in addition to continuing to research new ways and means to do so. 

Through many clinical studies I have examined screening for colorectal cancer and the role that diet and specific dietary factors play in the development of cancer. 

My research also includes studies on ways to best provide nutrition support to people with cancer who are unable to eat adequately. Through our research we developed methods of nutrition support which enable people to maintain a good nutrition state in spite of not being unable to eat for years. 

With fellow gastroenterologist Sidney Winawer I wrote the book Cancer Free: The Comprehensive Cancer Prevention Program. I am also the author of more than 120 research papers.

My Role at MSK

A gastroenterologist (GAS-troh-EN-teh-RAH-loh-jist) is a doctor with special training in the gastrointestinal (GI) system. This includes the esophagus, intestines, stomach, bile ducts, gallbladder, liver, and pancreas.

An internist is a doctor with special training in many conditions that affect organs, including the heart, kidney, liver, and lungs.
