Qi Gao, DCLS
Pathologist
My Role at MSKWe post reviews for MSK healthcare providers who have at least 30 patient experience surveys completed. If you do not see reviews for a provider, it may be because they do not yet have enough survey responses, or the provider may not be part of the group of healthcare providers included in the survey.
Only outpatient providers are included in the survey. Healthcare providers who only work in the hospital or in urgent care are not included in the survey. Pathologists or researchers who do not provide direct care to patients do not have reviews.

About Me
- Assistant Attending Pathologist
I started my journey as a clinical laboratory scientist in the flow cytometry laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center 11 years ago. During this time, I participated in the panel design and validation of an 18-color-BT-cell assay for rapid B-cell and T-cell leukemia and lymphoma screenings, as well as assays for minimal residual disease detection in plasma cell neoplasm (12-color), B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (13-color), chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small cell lymphocytic lymphoma (14-color), and myeloid neoplasms (28-color). These novel assays are being used for clinical assessment, multiple research projects, and clinical trials, and have significantly impacted treatment decisions for patients with hematologic neoplasms.

As a Doctor of Clinical Laboratory Science, I am also trained to act as a consulting liaison between laboratory specialists, pathologists, physicians, and other allied healthcare professionals. This allows me to serve as a resource for healthcare providers, to whom I provide education/consultations to guide appropriate test selection and accurate result interpretation.
During my training, I participated in a multidisciplinary diagnostic team, where I provided input on patient diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up plans. I am currently involved in multiple quality improvement projects relating to laboratory test orderings, utilization, and reporting to improve our test utilization and reduce unnecessary costs.
I am mostly interested in flow cytometry’s clinical applications for leukemia and lymphoma evaluations. As such, I design and validate multiparameter flow cytometric assays to improve their sensitivity and specificity for use in hematologic malignancies.
Apart from work, I like to travel and gain exposure to diverse culture, food, and people. I also enjoy petting goldfish and breeding them, so I have a lot of fish and many fish tanks at home. I also have a lovely dog that I enjoy cuddling and playing with. Additionally, my family likes to go out to the parks or hiking on weekends to get a closer look at nature.
A pathologist is a doctor who uses a microscope to make a diagnosis from cell and tissue samples. They analyze the samples to learn the cause and effects of a health condition.
