In this video, we’ll show how to adjust and use parts of a rollator.
A rollator is often called a “wheeled walker.” Unlike a typical rolling walker, a rollator has wheels on all 4 legs and has handle brakes to lock the back wheels. It also has a basket and built-in seat.
Not all rollators work the same. Your rollator will come with instructions. If those instructions are different from the ones here, or if the person’s healthcare provider gives you different instructions, follow them instead.
Locking and unlocking the brakes
To lock the brakes, push down the lever under each handle, until you feel it click into place.
To unlock the brakes, pull up the lever until you hear the click release.
Folding a rollator
First, get the rollator ready. Make sure it’s on a level surface and the brakes are locked so it doesn’t roll away as you fold it.
Lift up the seat.
Grip a handle with one hand and reach down with your other hand to grab the strap. On most rollators, the strap is attached to the cross bar under the seat. Sometimes, it’s on the seat or in the basket under the seat.
Slowly pull the strap up.
The rollator will fold in half, and the wheels will move closer together.
Once the rollator is folded, flip up the seat and padded backrest.
Unfolding a rollator
Before unfolding a rollator, make sure it’s on a level surface and the brakes are locked so it doesn’t roll away as you unfold it.
Grip both handles and slowly push down. The rollator will unfold, and the wheels will slide away from each other.
Check the folding hinge bar on each side of the rollator. If it isn’t straight, use the palm of your hand to push it all the way down.
Flip down the seat and padded backrest.
Adjusting the handle height
To adjust the handle height, find the knob on the side of the post and turn it counterclockwise to unscrew it.
Take the knob and washer off the bolt, then pull out the bolt. This releases the handlebar, which you can slide up or down.
To set the handle height, have the person who uses the rollator stand with their arms at their sides. Lift the handle until it’s lined up with their wrist.
Find the hole on the handlebar that’s closest to that height, and put the bolt into that hole. Place the washer and knob back on the bolt, then turn the knob clockwise to screw it back on.
Repeat these steps with the other handle.
If you have any questions, contact the person’s healthcare provider.
