1. Why Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK)?

The experts at MSK are there to help ensure that you and those you love, understand the cancer treatment process and provide practical support during your treatment. MSK is the world’s oldest and largest private cancer center, devoting more than 130 years to patient care and research. It is consistently ranked among the top hospitals for adult and pediatric cancer care in the United States. MSK doctors are highly specialized in using the most-advanced approaches for diagnosing and treating common and rare cancers in both adults and children. MSK doctors have one focus: providing compassionate cancer care to help each patient have the best possible outcome. As a world-leading cancer center, MSK uses the most-advanced surgical, medical, and radiological treatments available. MSK doctors have pioneered many advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

2. What is MSK Direct?

Brookfield has partnered with MSK to bring you and your family members MSK Direct, a program that offers guided access to expert cancer care from a team of dedicated cancer specialists. The team includes experienced nurses, social workers and MSK Care Advisors who will be there to guide you through a range of services across the cancer spectrum – from prevention and screenings to treatment and survivorship.

3. When should I contact MSK Direct?

Call MSK Direct if you or a family member:

  • Are diagnosed with cancer and would like to explore options for treatment at MSK
  • Receive results from a medical test or exam that indicate a suspicion of cancer and would like to explore options for treatment at MSK
  • Would like a second opinion from MSK on a cancer diagnosis or care plan received from another facility
  • Are in cancer treatment elsewhere and would like to consult with an MSK specialist about possible options

4. What will the MSK Direct team do?

MSK Direct helps:

  • Schedule an expedited initial appointment at MSK
  • Gather necessary medical records for the first appointment at MSK
  • Answer questions throughout your cancer journey from our team of experts
  • Facilitate virtual services for patients who are unable to travel to MSK
  • Recommend a local facility if the patient lives far from MSK and prefers to be treated closer to home

5. What are MSK Remote Services?

To offer the most comprehensive and accurate guidance possible, MSK brings together experts from pathology, radiology, and oncology to provide you with MSK Remote Services. Remote Services include:

  • Access to a team of MSK oncology nurses and Care Advisors. They will work with you to gather your relevant medical records, radiology studies, and pathology materials. They will also answer any questions you might have throughout the process and help you determine the best questions to ask your MSK doctor.*
  • A pathology review. An MSK pathologist will review the materials provided.
  • A radiology review. An MSK radiologist will review the recent imaging scans.
  • A comprehensive written opinion and recommended care plan prepared by an MSK oncologist who specializes in the specifics of your disease.

 * Outside of the United States, MSK Direct may not be able to collect a patient’s records on their behalf. MSK can only review records in English. If a patient’s medical records are not available in English, the MSK Direct team can help you arrange to have them translated by a medical translator for an additional fee.

6. What is the cost for an MSK remote services?

If you are enrolled in the Brookfield sponsored Aetna plan, MSK will bill your health insurance for the cost of your remote care, and you will only be responsible for copays and deductibles. If you are enrolled in the HMSA plan, please contact MSK Direct to discuss your options.

If you are enrolled in a different health insurance issued in the United States, contact MSK Direct to request pricing for a remote written consult. Pathology and radiology reviews are submitted to insurance and subject to copays and deductibles. If you have Medicare, you may receive additional bills for applicable co-insurance, deductibles, or co-pays.

7. How can MSK Direct help me if I don’t have cancer?

Because many cancers are more treatable when caught early, Brookfield has partnered with MSK through MSK Direct to offer educational resources about cancer screening and early detection. These programs can benefit Brookfield employees and their family members.

8. Do I have to enroll to participate in MSK Direct?

No, you do not need to enroll for MSK Direct. All Brookfield employees and their family members have access to the services provided by MSK Direct.

9. Who is eligible to use MSK Direct?

All Brookfield employees and their family members have access to MSK Direct, regardless of enrollment in other health benefits offered by the Brookfield, at no additional cost beyond the standard copays, coinsurance and deductibles for the medical services received from MSK. Family members include, but are not limited to, spouse/partner, children, parents, parents-in-law, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, subject to insurance verification.

10. Does this partnership impact my other benefits?

No, MSK Direct is an additional benefit that does not impact or change your other health benefits.

11. Do I have to pay extra to use MSK Direct?

No. All Brookfield employees and their family members have access to the services provided by MSK Direct at no additional cost. Medical care provided by MSK will be subject to the standard out of pocket costs (such as copays, deductibles and coinsurance) of each individual’s medical plan. MSK is considered an in-network facility under Brookfield’s Aetna health plan. Call MSK Direct or your health plan to verify your health plan’s coverage.

12. Can I access MSK Direct even if I don’t have a confirmed cancer diagnosis?

Yes. MSK Direct can help before a confirmed diagnosis of cancer is received. You may contact MSK Direct when you receive results from a blood test, imaging exam or pathology report that indicate you may have cancer. The staff at MSK Direct can arrange an appointment with an MSK physician to further evaluate your situation.

13. Where is MSK located?

In addition to the main hospital in Manhattan, MSK has outpatient facilities located in New York (Brooklyn, Long Island and Westchester) and New Jersey.

14. Do I have to go to MSK for cancer care?

No. Brookfield values offering you a choice when it comes to your health. The services provided by MSK Direct are available to you as an option should you or a family member need cancer care. The decision on where to go for care is always your decision.
