Andrea Cercek Named to the Inaugural 2024 TIME100 Health List

Andrea Cercek Named to the Inaugural 2024 TIME100 Health List
Andrea Cercek, MD, gastrointestinal oncologist, section head of Colorectal Cancer, and co-director of the Center for Young Onset Colorectal and Gastrointestinal Cancers, was named to the TIME100 Health list. The inaugural list recognizes the 100 most influential individuals in health and medicine who have made significant contributions to improving global health outcomes, advancing medical research, and driving innovation in healthcare delivery. Dr. Cercek was elected for her groundbreaking clinical trial on rectal cancer in young people as well as her continuous work in colorectal cancer.

Andrea Cercek, MD, gastrointestinal oncologist, section head of Colorectal Cancer, and co-director of the Center for Young Onset Colorectal and Gastrointestinal Cancers, was awarded the Louise and Allston Boyer Young Investigators Award for Clinical Research. The award honors physicians at the associate level or below who have demonstrated great promise and accomplishment in clinical investigations.

Selwyn Vickers Named Black Healthcare Leader to Know by Becker’s Hospital Review

Selwyn M. Vickers, MD, FACS, President and CEO, was honored as a 2024 Black healthcare leader to know by Becker’s Hospital Review. The list honors Black healthcare leaders who are shaping the patient experience, educating, and training the next generation of healthcare providers, and furthering equity, and inclusion.

Carol Aghajanian Inducted into Giants of Cancer Care Class of 2024

Carol Aghajanian, MD
Carol Aghajanian, MD, gynecologic oncologist and chief of the Gynecologic Medical Oncology Service, was named to OncLive’s 12th annual class of Giants of Cancer Care for her groundbreaking work in gynecologic oncology. The Giants of Cancer Care program aims to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of leading researchers and educators whose discoveries have propelled the field and set the groundwork for future advancements. A selection committee of more than 115 esteemed oncologists chooses honorees from a range of tumor types and specialized categories. The inductees were selected by their peers for their remarkable achievements in oncology research and clinical practice. Dr. Aghajanian joins 11 MSK experts previously elected, including Dean F. Bajorin, MD; Sir Murray F. Brennan GNZM, MD, FACSLuis Diaz Jr., MD; the late Jimmie C. Holland, MD, Robert J. Motzer, MD; Larry Norton, MD; Eileen M. O’Reilly, MDRichard J. O’Reilly, MDCharles L. Sawyers, MD;  Deb Schrag, MD, MPH, and Howard I. Scher, MD. She was formally recognized on May 30, 2024, at a reception in Chicago, IL.

William Rosa Awarded the Top Leader in Hospice and Palliative Care by The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine

William Rosa, PhD, MBE, MS, APRN, behavioral scientist, was awarded the Top Leader in Hospice and Palliative Care by The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). The award recognizes an individual who has made exemplary contributions to hospice and palliative medicine, a field focused on relieving suffering and supporting people with serious illnesses to live their lives as fully as possible. Dr. Rosa was recognized by his peers for the important role he played in advancing hospice and palliative care.

Sascha Haubner Awarded the American Society of Hematology Peter Steelman Scholar Award

Sascha Haubner
Sascha Haubner, senior research scientist, was honored with the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Peter Steelman Scholar Award. The ASH-Peter Steelman Scholar Award supports exceptional academic research efforts focused on acute myeloid leukemia and is part of ASH’s Scholar Award program. Dr. Haubner was recognized for developing a novel combinatorial CAR T cell therapy (termed ADCLEC.syn1) which is currently undergoing clinical testing for AML patients at MSK.

Lukas Carter Awarded the John D. Boice Jr. Young Investigator Award

Lukas Carter, PhD, research scholar, received the John D. Boice Jr. Young Investigator Award. The Young Investigator Award recognizes an early career professional engaged in some aspect of science pertaining to radiation protection and measurements. Dr. Carter was selected as the fourth recipient of the award that includes a travel grant to attend the annual meeting of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy where he will be recognized for his accomplishments.

Lisa Wall Awarded the ANA DAISY Award for Ethics in Nursing Practice and Leadership

Lisa Wall, PhD, RN, CNS, AOCNS, HEC-C, clinical nurse specialist and ethics consultant, was honored with the ANA DAISY Award for Ethics in Nursing Practice and Leadership. The award is in collaboration with the DAISY Foundation and the American Nurses Association’s Center for Ethics and Human Rights.

The awards recognize nurse leaders and clinical nurses whose leadership, compassion and clinical practice demonstrate the importance of human values and ethics in nursing. Dr. Wall was selected for her numerous contributions to ethical awareness and ethical decision-making.

Eight distinguished MSK nurses and one nursing team were recognized with the 2024 Robbins Family Award for Nursing Excellence. The Robbins Family Foundation has sponsored the awards to honor MSK nurses’ extraordinary achievements and contributions to MSK’s mission and core values.

Tanmana Mitra Received the Dorris J. Hutchison Fellowship Award

Tanmana Mitra, graduate student, was awarded the Dorris J. Hutchison Fellowship Award. The award recognizes outstanding research under the mentorship of an MSK faculty member.
 

Elizabeth Benitez Awarded the Barbara and Stephen Friedman Fellowship Award

Elizabeth Benitez
Elizabeth Benitez, MD and PhD student, was awarded the Barbara and Stephen Friedman Fellowship Award. The award provides support for outstanding young investigators in the Sloan Kettering Institute who are receiving their PhD from the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSK) and was established in 1997 with an endowment gift from MSK Board Member Steve Friedman.

Zhi Zheng Received the Bruce Charles Forbes Fellowship Award

Zhi Zheng, graduate student, received the Bruce Charles Forbes Fellowship Award. The award provides support for outstanding young investigators in the Sloan Kettering Institute pursuing their PhD thesis research from the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSK) and was established in 1995 with an endowment gift from MSK Board Member Steve Forbes, Jr.

Dana Goerzen Awarded the General Atlantic Graduate Research Fellowship Award

Dana Goerzen
Dana Goerzan, graduate student of the Weill Cornell PBSB PhD program, received the General Atlantic Graduate Research Fellowship Award. The award provides support for a promising researcher to pursue his or her education and key research interests that integrate scientific priorities with important clinical needs.


 

Kaloyan (Kal) Tsanov Received Postdoctoral Research Award

Kaloyan (Kal) Tsanov, PhD, postdoctoral researcher received a Postdoctoral Research Award. This award recognizes outstanding accomplishments and the promise shown by research fellows or research associates who have been at MSK for at least one year and have published a significant research paper as first author.

Alessandra Brambati Wins 2024 Tri-Institutional Breakout Prize for Junior Investigators

Alessandra Brambati, PhD, post-doctoral, was award the 2024 Tri-Institutional Breakout Prize for Junior Investigators. Recipients of the Tri-Institutional Breakout Prize are postdoctoral trainees nominated by their mentors and selected by a committee of faculty members from MSK, Rockefeller University, and Weill Cornell Medicine. Winners were selected based on their research accomplishments, the impact of their science, and the likelihood of their success as independent investigators.

Moralba Dominguez Garcia and Viktor Belay Awarded Maximizing Excellence in Research, Innovation, and Technology Award

Moralba Dominguez Garciaresearch scholar and Viktor Belay, graduate student, were awarded Maximizing Excellence in Research, Innovation, and Technology (MERIT) Awards. This award was created to fund the research of young investigators from historically underrepresented groups.

Richard Hite Awarded the Louise and Allston Boyer Young Investigator Award for Basic Research

Richard Hite, PhDstructural biologist, received the Louise and Allston Boyer Young Investigator Award for Basic Research. The award honors researchers at the associate level or below who have demonstrated great promise and accomplishment in laboratory investigations.
 

Hans Gerdes Awarded the Willet F. Whitmore Award for Clinical Excellence

Hans Gerdes, MD, gastroenterologist, received the Willet F. Whitmore Award for Clinical Excellence. The award honors a clinician whose talent, dedication, and compassion reflect the standards set by Willet F. Whitmore during his more than 46 years of service at MSK.
 

Oliver Delattre Awarded the Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Prize

Olivier Delattre, MD, PhD, director of the SIREDO Oncology Center and the research unit director of the Cancer, Heterogeneity, Instability and Plasticity (CHIP) unit at Inserm/Institut Curie, was awarded The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Prize. This award recognizes individuals who have made significant or groundbreaking contributions to pediatric oncology, highlighting the long-standing and future-facing partnerships between The Society and MSK and affirming the global leadership of MSK in the field of pediatric oncology.
