Dr. Gao’s research interests are rooted in the quest to harness the power of molecular and clinical data to accelerate cancer research and revolutionize cancer care. His primary focus is on building effective methods and infrastructure to bridge the gap between complex data and actionable insights for cancer researchers and clinicians. As an Associate Attending in the Computational Oncology Service and the Head of Engineering for the Cancer Data Science Initiative (CDSI) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, he lead a team to develop sophisticated methods and platforms to integrate multimodal real world patient data and apply advanced artificial intelligence (AI) methods to answer research and clinical questions. Notable projects co-led/founded by Dr. Gao include cBioPortal, OncoKB, Genome Nexus, and MSK MIND. These projects and new efforts in CDSI are geared towards creating a clinical decision support infrastructure that provides clinicians with data-driven insights into patients’ diseases, ultimately informing and enhancing clinical decisions.
