Adam J. Schoenfeld, MD
Thoracic Medical Oncologist, Cellular Therapist & Early Drug Development Specialist
My Role at MSKWe post reviews for MSK healthcare providers who have at least 30 patient experience surveys completed. If you do not see reviews for a provider, it may be because they do not yet have enough survey responses, or the provider may not be part of the group of healthcare providers included in the survey.
Only outpatient providers are included in the survey. Healthcare providers who only work in the hospital or in urgent care are not included in the survey. Pathologists or researchers who do not provide direct care to patients do not have reviews.

About Me
- Assistant Attending Physician
I am a medical oncologist devoted to caring for people with lung cancer and bringing novel immunotherapies to patients with solid tumors. Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses a person’s own immune system to attack cancer cells in much the same way that it would bacteria or viruses. This approach has shown promise in lung cancer and other solid tumors.
I work closely with a multidisciplinary team including radiation oncologists, thoracic surgeons, pulmonologists, and pathologists, among other experts, to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to each patient’s wants and needs. We know that receiving a diagnosis of cancer is daunting. My team and I are committed to supporting each patient and their family through their experience with cancer. We work together to provide every person who comes to us with the highest level of care. From our initial visit onward, we are here for our patients and will spend as much time as needed to ensure that everyone understands and agrees with the care plan.

Sometimes, the best treatment is available through a clinical trial. We lead many clinical trials for people with lung cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), which are open to patients who are interested and eligible. If a patient would like to participate in a clinical trial, my colleagues and I take the time to answer any and all questions about the process. Painting a clear picture of what the experience will be like is important to us, because it helps our patients make informed decisions about their care.
My research focuses on using innovative strategies to harness the immune system to treat cancer. I am a member of MSK’s Cellular Therapeutics Center and Early Drug Development Service, where I design and lead early-phase clinical trials that use genetically engineered versions of a patient’s immune cells as living drugs to fight their cancer. I work closely with the scientists who pioneered these techniques to bring cutting-edge approaches to difficult-to-treat tumors.
A thoracic medical oncologist is a cancer doctor who specializes in thoracic (thor-A-sik) cancers. These are cancers that have to do with the chest, including lung, tracheal (windpipe), and thymic (thymus) cancers.
A cellular therapy specialist is a doctor with special training in using cell therapies to treat health conditions such as cancer. Therapies can include chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy.
An early drug development specialist tests new drugs to treat cancer. They have special training in research studies, known as clinical trials.
