Claudia Hoffman, DDS
Dental Surgeon
My Role at MSKWe post reviews for MSK healthcare providers who have at least 30 patient experience surveys completed. If you do not see reviews for a provider, it may be because they do not yet have enough survey responses, or the provider may not be part of the group of healthcare providers included in the survey.
Only outpatient providers are included in the survey. Healthcare providers who only work in the hospital or in urgent care are not included in the survey. Pathologists or researchers who do not provide direct care to patients do not have reviews.
About Me
- Assistant Attending Dentist
I am a dental surgeon specializing in the oral care of patients with cancer. As a member of our Dental Service, I draw upon my expertise across areas of dentistry, including endodontic therapy (root canals), internal bleaching, and apicoectomy (endodontic microsurgery).

Going to the dentist can be an uncomfortable experience for people for many reasons. Some dental procedures, like root canals, have a reputation for being painful and stressful. Although this intervention is usually painless, due to use of local anesthesia to anesthetize the tooth and its surrounding areas, the thought of a root canal can be distressing. Dental visits, in general, are associated with negative perceptions; I am aware of this and put my patients at ease by candidly discussing their fears and concerns. Once we have a mutual understanding of what they are worried about, I can reassure them that they will receive gentle but effective dental care that meets their individual needs. I take the time to make sure that my patients understand their treatment options and what to expect so they feel calm and well-informed before their procedure. It is my goal that patients leave Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) pain-free, well-cared-for, and with the feeling that the dental care they received was much easier than their initial fears would have allowed them to believe.
For some patients, the side effects of cancer and its treatment can significantly affect dental health and physical appearance. Cancer therapy can come with challenges to quality of life and mental and physical well-being. During this vulnerable time, the last thing that I want my patients to worry about is their dental care. Over the past 20 years, endodontics (which studies the soft tissue inside the teeth, the “dental pulp”) has grown to include contemporary tools and technologies like microscopes and cone-bean computed tomography (CBCT). Microscopes help us precisely visualize the anatomy of the tooth and canals while CBCT illustrates anatomy and pathology with a clarity not possible in the past. These advances give providers like me vital information about a patient’s dental anatomy and the accurate way to treat related issues, directly driving endodontic treatment success rates. As such, I work exclusively under a microscope to administer targeted care.
I decided to pursue a career in dental surgery based on the example set by my father and older sister. My father is a retired oral surgeon, and I have great respect for his mind, work ethic, and character; this led me to become a dentist and oral surgeon. Outside of work, I enjoy fitness, travel, reading, watching movies, philanthropy, and spending time with my two boys and the rest of my family.
A dental surgeon is a doctor with special training in dental surgery.
