The uterus, also known as the endometrium, is a hollow organ in the pelvis in which a baby can grow. It is part of the female reproductive system. Cancerous cells that develop in its muscles or supporting tissues are called uterine sarcoma.

Uterine sarcoma is rare, making up less than 4 percent of all cancers of the uterus. Only 1,200 women are diagnosed with this disease in the United States each year.

Types of Uterine Sarcoma

There are several types of uterine sarcoma. Each type is different in the way it develops and changes over time, as well as in how it should be treated.

The types of uterine sarcoma are:

  • leiomyosarcoma
  • carcinosarcoma
  • low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma
  • high-grade undifferentiated sarcoma
  • adenosarcoma
  • adenosarcoma with sarcomatous overgrowth
  • perivascular endothelial cell tumor (PEComa)

Memorial Sloan Kettering recommends that pathologists familiar with all types of uterine sarcoma are part of your care team. This ensures that you get the best treatment.

Symptoms

Most women with uterine sarcoma first notice abnormal bleeding or unusual discharge from the vagina between menstrual periods or after menopause.

Other symptoms can include pain, an unusual feeling of fullness in the pelvic area, and frequent urination.
