The Department of Medicine Clinical Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) welcomes undergraduate rising sophomores and juniors who are interested in exploring careers in biomedical research to participate in a summer experience. The aim of the CURE program is to provide students a background in research in clinical medicine. The program consists of an 8-week experience at MSK. Students will have a structured didactic series featuring training in the key aspects of clinical research conduct, as well as exposure to different careers in biomedical research. Each student will be paired with a faculty mentor to participate in an active research project. These projects may involve data derived from clinical trials at MSK, or real-world outcomes from patients treated at the center. The aim is for the student to gain exposure to the conduct of clinical trials in medicine, applications of data science in the medical field, or other topics relevant to clinical research. Summer participants may spend some time observing the care of cancer patients based on their interest.

A student’s experience is expected to include:

  • Participation in one or more research projects developed with the guidance of the faculty mentor.
  • Attending research and clinical meetings with the mentor and research team.
  • Observations/shadowing in outpatient clinic and/or inpatient rounds.
  • Attendance at seminars and lectures offered across the wider MSK community.
  • Gaining skills highly relevant to clinical cancer research, including exposure to the Electronic Health Record (EHR), principals of ethical sound clinical research practice and data integrity, and use of the secure database REDCAP.
  • Attendance at a weekly session focused on career pathways in clinical research delivered by the Program Directors and faculty members.

Our faculty researchers focused on Clinical and Translational Cancer Research work in a variety of settings. For most, this is an office or “dry” laboratory setting where research is focused on data, but in some cases, there may be some component of work in a “wet” laboratory. Participants will have access to secure computers in shared flexible office space.

Each intern will prepare a brief capstone presentation at the end of the summer.

Please note this internship requires on-site presence. Therefore, all employees should live within a commutable distance to MSK.

MSK will not reimburse for travel expenses.
