The MSKCC Dermatology Service offers a gap year research fellowship for students between their 3rd and 4th year of medical school. The fellowship runs concurrent with the academic calendar from the beginning of July through the end of June. There are typically between 3 and 6 gap year student fellows accepted into the program annually. There is a formal didactic program for the fellowship that covers clinical topics and topics in research methodology. The fellowship is a dedicated research year, but student fellows are also provided with limited clinical exposure during the course of the year. Each student is assigned a primary faculty mentor. All students are expected to complete at least one primary research project from inception through publication. Student fellows typically also work on multiple collaborative studies and usually publish 3-5 papers during the one-year fellowship. Students are responsible for the organization and preparation of weekly clinical/pathologic conferences and research presentations. Students receive a 20,000 dollars stipend for the year. Student follows are encouraged to present their research at a national meeting during their fellowship, for which institutional support may be provided. The MSKCC Dermatology student gap year fellowship focuses on clinical research. The clinical focus of the dermatology service is on all forms of skin cancer and on the adverse events associated with cancer therapies. Areas of research include epidemiology, novel imaging modalities, outcomes research, and clinical trials.
