MSK EBP Consulting provides healthcare providers with unique access to a number of success factors, built around the foundation of MSK’s unique SEEK™ (Spirit of Inquiry, Expanding EBP Knowledge) program:

  • Proprietary process designed to teach EBP methodology to nurses and interprofessional partners. At MSK, these professionals share a focus on oncology, however, SEEK™ is adaptable to a broad range of healthcare institutions and challenges.
  • Seasoned mentors and trainers, whose relevant experience includes EBP training and prior involvement in a successful EBP project. On MSK’s EBP Consulting team, our mentors and trainers are MSK healthcare professionals with extensive involvement and expertise in the institution’s SEEK™ program.
  • Comprehensive SEEK™ curriculum, which relies upon a teach-back methodology—that is, an evidence-based communication strategy directed at ensuring that learners can verbalize and demonstrate their own understanding. Materials distributed and utilized during MSK EBP Consulting sessions may be utilized by participants within their organizations.

SEEK™: A Unique Approach to EBP Education and Implementation

SEEK™ was originally developed by a team of oncology certified nurses with advanced degrees at MSK. Their objective was to operationalize and perpetuate an EBP-focused culture throughout our institution, a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. MSK’s commitment to excellence has been recognized in many ways, including with Magnet® designation for our exceptional nursing department as well as the first to receive a gold-level designation for Excellence in EBP and Outcomes in Healthcare.

We developed SEEK™ to empower and support our oncology nurses to demonstrate exemplary professional practice—to utilize the EBP methodology as part of a process of continuous improvement. But SEEK™ is not only pertinent to nurses. Supporting and engaging non-nursing clinicians in EBP is crucial to keep transforming our institution and applying new knowledge and evidence to clinical practice.

To support this initiative, MSK’s department of nursing established an EBP Steering Committee that oversees the SEEK™ program, directing efforts to operationalize and enculturate EBP across our organization. We’ve also committed to training SEEK™-specialized mentors, who play an invaluable role in guiding trainees through the complex stages involved with appraising relevant evidence, developing recommendations, and evaluating meaningful metrics.

Among numerous successful examples, MSK’s SEEK™ method of EBP enabled our nurses to develop meaningful strategies to identify and respond to patient anxiety tied to necessary surveillance testing. It validated the effectiveness of “daily huddles” among nursing teams coping with inpatient caseloads. And it supported the development of clinical strategies to help minimize delirium among high-risk adult populations.

User Testimonials

The SEEK™ program is focused on transparency and accountability. With a strong focus on measuring SEEK™’s impact on both patients and our healthcare institution, the MSK SEEK™ team also monitors the value of EBP on clinical nurses’ professional growth and development. Results over time have revealed significant improvement in these scores for both EBP mentors and practitioners.

In MSK surveys, feedback from our SEEK™ trained professionals has been strongly favorable. “During my involvement in the SEEK™ program, I shifted away from traditional approaches and embraced seeking evidence to support my daily practice,” one nursing professional commented. “The SEEK™ program guided me in critically appraising research and synthesizing it to make meaningful arguments for evidence-based practice change. Since participating in SEEK™ I successfully implemented an evidence-based practice change and transitioned into a mentoring role.”

In the words of another SEEK™ graduate, who came to the program from outside MSK, “I was fortunate to join the SEEK™ program for the Spring 2023 session. Coming from an outside institution, it provided me with an opportunity to learn how to research an evidence-based project utilizing the SEEK™ method and bring it back to my institution. The formulaic approach provided me with structure and the tools to apply at my institution and share evidence-based practice with my colleagues.”
